The stories of Helen Waterford and Alfons Heck, both born in Germany, are told in alternating chapters. Helen, a young Jewish girl, is forced to hide in Amsterdam. She is eventually arrested and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Alfons, who lives just a few miles away, joins the Hitler Youth and is eventually sent as a soldier to the frontlines to fight.
